Deutsche Mythologie Collection 2024

The theme for this year’s collection, 𝔇𝔢𝔲𝔱𝔰𝔠𝔥𝔢 𝔐𝔶𝔱𝔥𝔬𝔩𝔬𝔤𝔦𝔢, was taken from the treatise of the same name, written by Jacob Grimm (of the Brothers Grimm). An exhaustive compendium from 1835, it traces the roots of folkloric German traditions and tales, as we too trace the seeds of seasonal lore to those that have shaped and defined our modern “holiday culture”. From Saint Nicholas’s origins in shamanic Odin, to winter’s Wild Hunt becoming the 12 days of Christmas, we celebrate these heathen roots through plants and scent.

No exploration of this topic would be replete without the pagan origin of Santa, which lays in Teutonic god Odin. Allfather, leader of the possessed, Mr. Wednesday, and hundreds of other nicknames all to venerate his different facets. To those who revere him, no introduction is necessary. A god of wisdom , war, magic, and culture who along with his brothers, gave life to the earth itself from the body of the giant Ymir. The grass, sky, and ocean all created from his dismemberment, and echoed by the airy, marine, and grassy elements within this fragrance. His sacrifices for those who walk this path are many, but perhaps none greater than initiating himself for 9 days and 9 nights to give mankind the occult knowledge of the runes.
Odin perfume is based around a modified 9 herbs charm accord, including chamomile and juniper. Clary sage absolute creates a temporary ecstasy, in honor of Odin as seiðmaður -- a sorcerer of secret magical practices. Rock rose gently supports a coumarin-heavy trio of flouve, lavender absolute, and tonka butter— an airy “breath of god”, bestowed upon humanity to invigorate us to life. Tobacco, this season’s botanical ally, calls in the gods as no other plant can. Oakwood rune notes reveal themselves as though carved from Yggdrasil’s roots.

𝔉𝔯𝔞𝔲 ℌ𝔬𝔩𝔩𝔢 (solid perfume and fixative 7.5 𝔪𝔩) The sacred holly stems from the word holy, and has been believed to be a “female” counterpart to “masculine” plants such as mistletoe and ivy in heathen or druid practice. Its etymological roots also circle back to Frau Holle (Holda) whom the Brothers Grimm attempted to deify through folktale from older attestations. “Mother Frost” or even the Weisse Frau, her numerous names weave a fantasy of winter crone, generous mother to babies who pass into the underworld, or even a crone leading witches on distaffs through the Wild Hunt. This floral-evergreen solid perfume is breathtaking alone, or layered with other winter scents such as Krampus, to deepen its long lasting effect on skin. Created with Yerba mate absolute (in the holly family), fresh fir, orange blossom and oakmoss in a coconut oil and candellila wax base, this product contains no beeswax and is suitable for vegans.

𝔚𝔬𝔩𝔣 𝔐𝔬𝔬𝔫 𝔦𝔫𝔠𝔢𝔫𝔰𝔢 (20 charcoal cones) inspired by the first moon after Yule, and Odin’s wolves, these lunar incense cones are meant to set intention and purify spaces while calling in energy through aromatic magic. Musky ambrette and hinoki give an illusion of winter fur, while bated cold breath hangs in the air. Sustainable Palo Santo and frosted clove create an anodyne lunar glow, breathtaking in the burn. Brumal birch adds a cold, wintergreen quality to the melange of woods which burn bright and deep for lone, frigid nights. These cones will be scented on Sunday’s full moon, at the end of Mercury’s retrograde, to potentiate the highest vibration of the plants within.

A return of our holiday classic, Krampus is a limited batch perfume which first appeared in 2020, that celebrates the Germanic elements of Yule with a sinister twist. The cult of Krampus, the devilish and cryptozoological figure who kidnaps naughty children in his sack, originated somewhere in the Alps, and is believed to have developed in lore from tales of the Wild Hunt. On the 12 days leading up to new year’s day (presumably beginning on the Winter Solstice) Odin was said to lead a frenzied procession of the dead through hill and vale. It is quite surprising that both Krampus and jolly Santa both came from this same primal manifestation of the Allfather, but it is where falsities of Krampus leading the Hunt himself may originate.
This perfume of his name is surprisingly bright, as it was created as a Germanic Florida water to keep negative spirits at bay, and counteract the Saturnian forces taking hold. Bright blue yarrow, cleansing juniper and Bavarian forest trees protect and create a verdant boundary. Idunn’s apples uplift, and phallic clove lends a mulled cider note. Pfeffernuße spice for nostalgia while damp mosses bring Jovian energy.

-“Gyfu”, Anglo Saxon rune poem, 7th century
This time of the year, our attention turns to gift giving, which though it has become a commercial cash grab, at its core is the purity of energetic exchange. As the Havamal suggests, “a gift demands a gift”, the Gebo rune represents the shared experience of fires coming together to make each other burn brighter. The Gebo runic candle is based around the warming and sacred scents of the season that evoke mutual joy in togetherness. Solar frankincense resin, spiced pomander, and Glühwein punch. The combination of citrus and spice acts as a ward for negativity, frankincense banishes, while merrymaking libations such as mulled wine and Sylvester punch are a traditional way to bring loved ones together and warm— the secret ingredient in ours is sweet almond.
